These kids are never going to forget this summer. I went to Camp Moshava in Wild Rose , Wisconsin. We never had any surprise guests like this back then.

Matisyahu Performs "Happy Hanukkah" - The Tonight Show with Jay Leno
Wow, so now that Matisyahu has shed his kipah it was safe for him to write a Hanukkah song. Very interesting. Though Adam Sandler did not wear a kipah for his Hanukkah song, he at least mentions one. Oh the irony. That said , I do enjoy Matisyahu's song. Its just a long time coming.
The evolution of the pop culture Hanukkah song is quite curious. There was a long time where if you listened to the radio there were only X-mas songs in December then along came Adam Sandler who in December 1994 sang his 'Hanukkah Song' on Saturday Night Live. It was a silly song but somehow it caught on and has played on the radio every December since. Next came the Maccabeats with their song Candlelight that hit you tube by storm with millions of hits. The secular media went crazy . It was the first time shomer shabbos Jews gained notoriety for a Hanukkah song. Now Matisyahu who is known for being a hassidic reggae singer now isn' t hassidic, but has come out with a Hanukkah song. Now a Jewish singer who is popular in the secular world as a singer has come out with a Hanukkah song. We've come a long way folks.

matisyahu
so matisyahu is now a blond who does not wear a kipah. hmmm ... well i wonder what pushed him to change from dressing full on chasid to regular joe. i also wonder what his wife thinks about all of this. i hope that she is on board with all of this change otherwise deep trouble is in the horizon.
i think that matisyahu would have been popular had he never worn chassidic garb because in order to be a popular reggae singer in chassidic garb one would have to be extra good at what one does. as popular as he was with frummies he would not have been successful with the general public had he not been outstanding to begin with.
i actually have compassion for matisyahu. he must having a lot of doubt within himself which has changed his "look". it is also quite difficult to go through such confusion in the public eye. i wish him well and i wish him inner peace no matter how religious or non-religious he may be.

on matisyahu
when i first heard of matisyahu i was intrigued. he was a chasidic reggae singer. i can't say that i followed his career much since reggae isn't my thing. i did however register hearing about his break with lubavitch and his recent beard shaving.
on you tube i listened to matisyahu's recent interview where he speaks about his beard shaving. it was very profound. he said that when he became frum he felt he needed to immerse himself in all things religious but now he feels that things would still be cool if he shaved his beard. oh and that he still is observant. i found this profound as well as a bit uncomforting.
often when people become frum they go about it full force. sometimes this is what keeps them there. other times it spells trouble. they take on mitzvot too quickly before they are really ready and eventually its just too much all at once and then they let go of it all. this does not always happen . with some its just a personality thing. this is how they approach everything which actually is how matisyahu described himself. i think that its any one's guess what will happen. he may be just taking some time to normalize and he may still remain religious. i do not know what has perpetuated this quest of his. i don't know if something happened to make him feel this way or if it was the natural course of things that brought him to this point. it must be especially difficult to go through this stage as a public figure. i wish him well. i hope he figures things out , remains frum and becomes stronger for it.
