is 30 the the new twenty?

for the past 10  years i  have heard people say that 30 is the new twenty and 40 is the new 30 but is it really? and if this is true, should it be?
longevity is certainly a factor of the the "new" decade definitions.  when people lived shorter lives it was more important to be more serious about life sooner. with shorter life spans it was more important to have children in one's early twenties because having a child at 40 would mean one had even less time to see them grown up.
though its nice to have extended adolescence  im not sure its necessarily ideal. i think it would be nice to have a spouse and a family earlier in life so one could be more settled earlier and have longer to spend in the more "settled " stage of life.
then again, no matter how "settled" life can seem, there are always curve balls . someone who gets married young could also be divorced or widowed young.
i think that it is good that people are given a longer acceptable time to be young and unsettled these days than they did fifty years ago.it eases the pressure.
i realize that in frum society people are still expected to marry young, but i guess since i am more modern orthodox, there have always been a lot of people around who haven't married young.
as much as frum society thinks that they aren't effected by secular society they are still effected by it. this is why there are a lot of frum people who are in extended young adulthood.

agree to disagree

although i'm a big believer in the phrase 'to each his own' i admit that sometimes it is hard to really internalize. sometimes i find it hard to understand why others are so convinced of their logic when clearly i don't see how they are being logical. of course , being an adult is learning to agree to disagree even when you know you are right. being an adult stinks. no wonder there are so few of us.

stay at home sons

i recently viewed the movie the hangover part two after not having viewed the first  installment. it was a funny silly movie that fully envelops the expression  "boys will be boys" and that boys don't really want to grow up. it also shows the contrast between those who actually have jobs and spouses and children and those who do not. one of these male buddies is a self proclaimed stay at home son.
what is a stay at home son you ask? a 35 year old man who doesn't work and lives with his parents. he lives in the past and still thinks he and his buddies are 12 years old (which is true on some level) . unfortunately i think i have met one too many stay at home sons to find this term endearing. there probably are in reality some stay at home daughters as well.  these are individuals who  have just missed the boat on life while everyone else has moved on. moving on isn't just marriage and kids. moving on is working, and having a life outside of being your parent's child. its important to honor one's parents, but it is also  important to grow up and have a life of one's own. this is maturity. a parent's goal is to have a self sufficient child so the parent does not have to worry that his/her child won't be able to take care of him/herself once the parent is no more.
stay at home sons makes sure there are less men in the dating pool. less men in the dating pool means a longer shidduch crises. g-d help us all!
