For those of us who drive cars we know that you only pass another car on the left side of the road. Too bad people do not know this rule while walking. so many people try to pass me on the right side while I am walking even if there is no space on the right side of me to pass. I do not get it. It seems everyone likes to hug the side of a building when they walk. People, you do not pass on the right side while walking when there isn't any room on the sidewalk on the right side . I almost fell on the ice yesterday when some moron decided to squeeze past me on the right side of the sidewalk. First of all , I could have slipped because he startled me . There was room on my left side to pass me, instead he pushed me out of the way so he could pass. There should be walking licences in this city.

public transportation
once again i have experienced mr. toad's wild ride upon the q train this evening. i'm still reeling. how i long for an eight o'clock subway ride home that is peaceful.
i boarded the train this evening at seven-thirty after waiting for ten minutes for the train to come. i got a seat. some crazy woman hovered over me and pushed me as she was standing in front of my seat. its times like these that i wish i was six feet tall and three hundred pounds. if i was that large this lunatic would not have wanted to stand anywhere near me.
at some point a very disheveled sixtyish man sat down on the floor near me and i offered him my seat. of course the loony woman moved , as well as the other few people who were standing near where i had been sitting. note to self, dress more disheveled on the train, you will then have room to sit.
fortunately when i was standing there was a lot more space than when i had been sitting and i finally got another seat when i was three stops from home.
the only good part of the ride was that it was too crowded for the acrobats to do their routine on my train.
i really have to find a job that is walking distance from my home. riding the trains is for the birds.

making strides against breast cancer
today was the american cancer society's walk for a cure for breast cancer. there were a few locations for this event in the new york area. one location was in brooklyn's prospect park and the other was in manhattan's central park. i opted to participate in the central park walk. it was five miles long. it took me an hour and a half to complete. the hardest mile was the first mile. i had to weave through a lot of slow walkers so i could keep up a good pace. once i got to the second mile it was a lot easier. the more serious walkers were there and there was a good speed.
the first time i did the susan g. komen race for the cure for breast cancer i was amazed by how many breast cancer survivors there were. it saddened me that so many had actually had breast cancer until i realized that it was really a wonderful thing that there were so many breast cancer survivors in attendance. it meant that so many were able to beat the disease and were alive to tell the tale.
today it seemed natural to see so many breast cancer survivors in attendance. it is even more common now that women will be able to survive such a horrible disease. hopefully some day soon no one will ever have to contract such a horrible disease because there will be a cure.

boxed in
why is it that when i walk down the street in manhattan people always insist on passing me on the right hand side? i think that this is because not many new yorkers drive.
did you ever notice how people like to hang close to a building when they are walking down the street? i find this incredibly annoying. there could be barely a few inches space and the person behind me on the street will squeeze next to me just so they can walk next to the building. it is especially annoying when they want to do this when the building is to the right of me.
they say that walking clears one's mind, but sometimes all it does is fill my mind with stress when i have to deal the other people who share the sidewalk.

happy feet
as every good new yorker, i walk everywhere. when one walks everywhere one realizes one must have comfortable shoes. they need to be comfortable, but not anti-fashion. not being a fan of sneakers, my quest has been for a foot-friendly-yet cute shoe . the most comfortable-yet-cute shoes i have ever bought are from merrell. ecco shoes are a close second. the most comfortable sandals, although more on the sporty side , are tevah sandals. the soles of tevah sandals are made from actual tires. the most comfortable boots, though not the most durable, are by la canadienne . all of these brands show up in lower prices at dsw.
unfortunately my shoe research was spawned as a result of major foot pain . however , wearing a well made shoe might not always do the trick. sometimes its necessary to suck it up and go to a podiatrist and get custom made orthotics that can fit in regular shoes as well as sneakers.
foot pain sucks and as a new yorker one is always on one's feet. this is why i share this knowledge. if perhaps i can help restore effortless stepping for even one individual, this post will have been worthwhile.
