the city that sleeps

nyc is called the city that never sleeps. well... maybe manahttan is the city that never sleeps, but brooklyn, one of the five boroughs of nyc, is a borough that sleeps, or more specifically , midwood , brooklyn sleeps. when i get home late from work on say a monday,i can only get take out or junk food . all the grocery stores near me close before 8 pm. in fact i dont even know when they close on a monday night because im never home early enough to find out. if not for shabbos, the grocery stores would not even be open late on a Thursday night.
i know i really need to look in to ordering groceries from fresh direct. according to their website they have alot of kosher products, even chicken. of course , the hardest part of ordering from a place that delivers groceries is that i will have to be home when they arrive . i do think that i may actually explore this venue. i really need to keep away from the junk food.
sometimes i actually go food shopping before i leave the city if i know im low on food. but of course, i have to be in the mood to shlep the stuff home on the train.
we as jews love to eat, but apparently the jewish grocery store owners in my neighborhood arent too worried if anyone eats on monday unless its earlier in the day . perhaps they are trying to discourage night eating? is weight watchers paying them off? i have noticed alot of their products in the local stores.
i know that the brooklyn groceries think that everyone is eating shabbos leftovers on mondays so they can close early, but what about us singles? im busy all weekend, and usually run out of food at the end of the weekend and am starving for real food on mondays!
i need to change my work schedule and get out a little earlier on mondays so i dont starve!

some of the jewish groceries are open later (maybe not during the summer). and there's nothing wrong with going to a non-jewish grocery.

if you think midwood bad, it seems my friends in the suburbs have it much worse

unfortunately there arent any non-jewish grocery stores in my immediate area. the kosher ones took over the non-jewish ones. though a little out of the way for me ,
the nearest non-jewish grocery store closes at 8pm nightly as well.

Shoprite?
Though if you don't have a car or a bike, kinda difficult getting there.
There's now a 7-11 on M.

unfortunately i dont have a car . 7-11 has a very limited food selection and not much in the way of fresh produce.

There's a produce store, Grossman Farms, on M and 18th that's open pretty late. And they have bread, milk and humus too.

if you're near kings highway/e. 17th, there is "big banana." it has pretty much everything you'll need if you don't need jewish brands/cholov yisroel (but no kosher meat/poultry). for jewish places, i thought that places like glatt mart, moishe's and mountain fruit are open later, at least on wednesday/thursday. near me is ocean fruit, which i think is open till 11 on thursday. but again, all this might be different in the summer.

Not sure if we're talking about the same store, but on 17th or 18th, between P and Kings Highway, there's a new Shoprite style store. I went there once to check it out and it was too expensive, but I think I remember seeing kosher meat or at least chicken.

FF, how many hours you work? You can't go in the morning and come back or do you live too far?

MOSHE:

the store i'm talking about is on kings highway btw 16th/17th and is open at least until midnight.

what you are referring to is on 15th btw kings highway and p. my wife went in there a few times and she said there were some good sales (e.g., at one time i remember seltzer 3 for $1, and we're not talking mayim hayim). i've only been there once. i'm not a big fan of oversize supermarkets. too much time is wasted navigating the isles. 99% of what i need is in a regular grocery. the mrs., on the other hand, likes the mega supermarkets because she enjoys browsing the shelves.

actually, i didnt realize that the fruit store on m and e 18th street was open late. ill have to check that out.
my problem is when stores arent open late during the beginning of the week, especially mondays when i work a 12 hr day.
glatt mart and mountain fruit are only open late on wed and thursday night. in the summer i think its just thursday night.

Moshe, I believe you are referring to MetFresh, which is on East 15 between Ave P and Kings Highway. Not sure if it's open 24 hours, but it does have late hours (and yes, prices are high) FF- don't know where you live, but this is right near the Q/B train, and the B49 (ocean ave bus)

Also, again, depending on how far you live from buses, Goldberg's on 18th Avenue and 50th street is actually open 24 hours.

From what I remember, Goldberg's meat is nasty. I'd stay away.

Other than Pomegranate on Coney Island and L, don't know their hours yet, there's a new kosher store on Kings Highway and E 15th. The address is 1630 East 15th Street

Their flier said they're opening August 26th.
