being courteous

people often comment about how they love new yorkers who say what they feel without any filter. they feel like they are being "real" . well i for one would prefer "fake" to real if beastliness is considered honest. new yorkers love bargains as well and it doesn't cost anything to be courteous.
its better to be "fake" nice if it doesn't hurt another person's feelings in the process.

I hate how people defend rudeness with the faux-virtuous claim that they're "keeping it real."

No, they're just being obnoxious and insensitive.

I loved the politeness of people when I lived in the Midwest. When people act nicer, they end up feeling nicer too.

I'm quoting inexactly from the book "Sho-Gun" - a new arrival to Japan wanted to understand what's up with all this courtesy; even when insulting someone: "So sorry" and such. He was told something along the lines of that without courtesy, we devolve, society seeks to exist.

I am a big fan of fake nice. ANYTHING for the sake of not hurting others. Like that line from Bridesmaids:

"Why can't you be happy for me and then go home and talk about me behind my back like a normal person?"

Talk behind my back! As long as I don't know!
