im vs telephone

when i finally got a computer 7 years ago, i was introduced to the wonderful world of IM . its great, you can talk to someone and multi-task at the same time in a way not possible while chatting on the phone. i have found that more males IM than females. females tend to stick to the more old fashioned form of communication, namely the telephone. i being female love IM and wish more of my female friends would get in to IM. if my friends who call me late at night would only IM me instead it would be so much bettter. somehow i can unwind faster after a late night IM much better than a much too late night phone call. i really need to suggest it to them. the only thing is that some of my female friends are so technologically inept that it would be hard to get them to IM more. oh well....

It's not that females lie the "old-fashioned-ness" of the phone, they just like actually speaking with people. Though if guys can find a way to communicate without having to speak then they get hooked.

..I personally would much rather text than talk..

well, this is partly true, women do like speaking to people which is why they like the phone, but personally, i prefer speaking in person than over the telephone. i also like email and im a whole lot more than being on the phone for an hour and a half. i work at a job where i have to talk all day, at night i need some peace and quiet.

I used to love IMing, and preferred it to phone any day. Now though, I find myself not having signed into any of my SN's in about 5 months!

I just found other ways of communicating better. Twitter is #1 for me, that's the way I IM. Facebook comes in as #2, and e-mail as the 3rd way.

Most of my HS friends don't really go online much, only for school. So those are the ones I speak to on the phone.

But I do know what you mean, I always found it easier to have a conversation with someone online, cause then you can see the conversation, and there's no mis-hearing things, or not hearing things at all. You can space out for a second and then come right back to it and know where the conversation is at.

I'm so with you on that. I hate talking on the phone, especially with my can't shut up friends. It's a huge waste of time.

Get pidgin, it supports yahoo, aim, msn, google talk, icq, etc. And there's a plugin for fb chat which makes things so much simpler and easier to use than the ugly fb interface.

Moshe: I used to use pidgin, but then switched to Digsby, also get twitter updates from there, filtered to just alert me of replies.

Does digsby support merging users that are on multiple networks into 1? Like if I have someone who's on FB, yahoo and google, can I have that person appear as one contact or will he appear as 3?

Moshe: yea, you can, it basically has all the same features as pidgin.

I installed digsby, nice, but, not very robust. Takes up a lot more ram and virtual and twice as many threads. Actually a ridiculous amount of virtual memory. I'm gonna continue using it though, especially for the sync option.

I'd also rather IM or something of the sort, but after awhile that gets kinda... lifeless so I call people. Balance between the two is good.
